What To Know

  • Fentanyl: a synthetic opioid that is FDA approved to help treat patients with chronic severe pain. 
  • Illicit fentanyl has infiltrated the United States drug supply and is being “mixed in other illicit drugs to increase it’s potency, sold as powders and nasal sprays, and is increasingly pressed into pills made to look like legitimate prescription opioids.

Statistics

  • Fentanyl is 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin and 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. 
  •  From 2020-2021 overdose deaths involving opioids rose 38.1%.
  • More than 107,000 people lost their lives to a drug overdose in 2023, with nearly 70% of those deaths attributable to opioids such as fentanyl. 
  • 1 kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill 500,000 people.

Narcan

Narcan (naloxone) is a non-addictive nasal spray that can treat narcotic overdose in an emergency situation. It is available to purchase on Amazon and at different retail pharmacies. 

Testing Strips

Fentanyl test strips (FTS) are part of a harm reduction strategy designed to reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal overdose. They are available to purchase and are often supplied by local bars and restaurants.
